While I have so much respect for these bakers crafting these artisan loaves of bread that took a whole 24-hour period to craft, that’s just not how we’re rollin’ over here!
You see, I’m in this for the long haul… I want to consistently feed my family real, nourishing food. That means I’ve got to find recipes that are not only nutrient-dense, but that will actually happen over and over again. So when I try a recipe that’s super time-consuming or requires a lot of attention or precision, it just doesn’t make the cut.
But this recipe checks all of the boxes. It’s easy, fast, healthy, and delicious! So let’s make it happen, shall we?

Why Use Sourdough?
My family doesn’t love sourdough sandwich bread. They prefer the texture and flavor that yeast provides (here’s my Healthy Sandwich Bread Recipe). But, I’m determined to get sourdough in them through other recipes!
Why? In short, sourdough is incredibly nutritious. In fact, the wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria that occur in sourdough have been found to make it easier to digest than yeast bread. The fermentation process breaks down the phytic acid found in grains, making the nutrients like selenium, iron, and folate more available for absorption. There is a good bit of published research on the benefits of sourdough, so I’ll drop some of it below in case you’re curious.

What You’ll Need to Make a Double Chocolate Sourdough Bread Loaf
- Mixer with paddle attachment (You could mix by hand, but my Kitchen Aid mixer is probably the best Christmas gift I ever received!)
- Loaf pan (I prefer glass ones like this)
Ingredients for Chocolate Sourdough Bread Recipe
- 1 cup of fed sourdough starter (You need active, bubbly starter, so it needs to have been fed within the last 4-12 hours.)
- 1 1/2 cups of flour (fresh milled is best, but organic all-purpose flour works well)
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp salt (I use pink Himalayan salt. Sea salt is also a good choice.)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 3/4 stick of softened butter (6 tbsp)
- 1/4 cup cane sugar
- 1/4 cup raw honey or maple syrup
- 1 tbsp Stevia (I love Sweet Leaf)
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (Milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or chocolate chunks…you choose! I like Bake Believe’s Stevia-based chocolate chips.)
Instructions for Making Double Chocolate Sourdough Bread
1. Combine all ingredients into large mixing bowl.
2. Mix on low speed then move up to medium speed. It will look more like brownie batter than bread dough.
3. Butter sides of loaf pan.
4. Pour batter into loaf pan.
5. Cover with a damp tea towel. Place in warm spot (I put it on my counter with the under-cabinet lighting shining on it). Let dough rest for about 30 minutes at room temperature.
6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
7. Remove damp towel and bake for 40-45 minutes.
Final Thoughts on Double Chocolate Sourdough Bread
In my opinion, the best way to enjoy this delicious bread is with a little peanut butter on the top of your fresh slice. YUM! If you’re a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup fan, you’ll appreciate the flavor combination. You could also add a little butter to the top. Healthy, rich chocolate flavor for breakfast? Yes, please! For best results, warm the bread just a little before serving.

I’ll be honest. When I set out to find a chocolate chip sourdough bread recipe, I almost gave up. The bread recipes I saw called for several sets of stretch, a floured banneton basket, a Danish Dough whisk, and had very detailed instructions that gave me an instant headache. I’m sure bakers that follow those recipes end up with fabulous bread. But that’s just not my speed. So, if this is your first time working with sourdough or making bread, don’t be sacred. This simple recipe is a great way to get started, and you’ll still end up with a pretty indulgent bread!
